This is my first visit to Chengdu, and for some reason or just pure coincidence that, both my first & second round of golf in Sichuan are designed by JMP, the first round is the Grand Hills which just completed in 2008, the 2nd is this Luxehills which opened for business 2007 and in 2010 it was awarded“China Top 10 Golf Clubs”, the course is located about 30 minutes drive from the city center and is a part of a big property development.
Club Facilities & Service
The club is nicely fitted with contemporary design but the shower cubicles in locker room(1, 2) are limited & I had to wait naked due to too many people. The service of the staffs were ok & the food was good though.
Fairway & Green maintenance
Immaculate condition, very nicely done.
Caddy Service & knowledge
I don’t usually like playing at golf courses within a housing project but the houses here are not too intrusive and I did not notice much of them when I played as most of them are built behind tress and out of sight.
Had a quick look of the scorecard before I teed off, the blue tee is a daunting 6,698 yards but the white is only 6,059 yards, so I decided to go for the blue tee and possibly due to some of the ‘wider’ fairways, I found the course not as hard as I thought, and enjoyed playing due to the different & interesting design.
A rather unusual set up, 3 out of 4 of the par 3s (#2,#12 & #17), they all have a very similar distance from the blue tee at 175ish yards…wonder why?
As to the design of the holes, I like 2 par 3s, they are #2, & #17…very pretty, in addition, the par 4 #9 & the final par 5 #18 are challenging & well designed.
The first hole is a shorter par 5 but going slightly upslope.
The tee shot needs to carry the lake & going slightly uphill.
The tee shot of this par 4 has to lean left to avoid the bunker on the right, the approach is going upslope.
This is the hardest hole, a big dogleg right, going slightly uphill, the tee shot needs to carry the small creek & the approach has to aviod water on the left of the green.
This par 3 requires a good carry over the lake & from the blue tee it measures 196 yards, an index 17? who rated this?
Asmall dogleg left par 4, need to carry a bit if water to land on the green.
This par 5 is not long but a bit tighter than others.
This par 4 is going uphill with lots of bunkers!.
This par 4 is very pretty but it is also pretty tough, better consult to caddie for precise direction & distance before tee off as it is a bit confusing…to me anyway.
To play well on this short par 4, the first thing is to aviod the fairway bunkers on the landing area, the second is aviod the deep bunkers gurading the green : )
A fairly long par 4, needs to pay attention to the water on the right.
An ‘island’ green type par 3.
This is a dogleg left going slightly upslope.
The 2nd hardest hole par 4, the tee shot needs to carry water in front & going upslope all the way.
A straight forward par 4.
A nice par 5, the tee shot is blind & can not see the landing area, better check with the caddie for direction.
Another 170ish par 3? (same as #2 & #12!)
The final hole is par 5 divided into 3 sections by water, need to handle with care.
The club has gained a lot of reputation & fame for hosting big tournaments and the design & conditioning of the course did not disappoint, it is well above average, it would be even better if the club facilities & service can be improved a bit…..but still an excellent course.
