I have long heard the surrounding of this course is superb from friends but due to the longer distance from Hong Kong, I never had a chance to check it out until recently I played the Sino Golf Club which is half way there so I decided to give it a try, in fact, the club is only 2 hours 15 mintues from Huanggang……which wasn’t too bad for a 2 days tour.
10 of us chartered a van for 2 days and it costed us 1,600 RMB – plus an extra hotel room that I needed pay for the driver.
Club Facilities & Service
The club house is comparatively small but it is nice & cosy, the service of the staff were attentive & courteous, the food served was quite nice too.
Fairway & Green maintenance
Fairways were in pretty good shape, green were also above average. As to the surrounding area – the best I have seen…..much, much, much nicer than those counterparts in Shenzhen.
Caddy Service & knowledge
Average, most of them speak Cantonese – ideal for me.
Simply put – very interesting layout, very photogenic but with tons of water, hugh carry & ‘turtle back’ greens!
Is it fun to play? you may ask, I think so….in fact, I think it’s lots of fun….provided a). you are not afraid of water, b). choose the right tee box, c). your driver or woods have to work & d). bring as many balls as you can to ‘feel safe’…..and finally your putter has to work also.
If you can do all that, this is one good course to play on, very challenging and very satisfying …..even if you don’t play well, doesn’t matter, you will still enjoy the beautifully surrounding 1 , 2 & 3 with lots of majestic mature trees rarely seen in Hong Kong or even southern China.
The course is played a little longer than 6,150 yards from the blue tee due to the shorter par 5s but they are no push over as they are tight and well protected by water.
The 1st hole is a downslope with water on the right & trees on the left.
The approach needs to go back up slope to a slightly elevated green.
A short par 5, posiibley the only one reachable in 2.
If you are long, aim at the blue arrow (210 carry is needed), you will cut the fairway short.
An all carry water par 3.
A short par 4 but you need a long carry!
You will need to carry around 180 yards (from blue tee). Aim to the right where the blue arrow is, and is shorter
The approach is uphill
A Dogleg left, you can tee off with a mid iron here for 150 -160 yards to the left where the red dot is (but water is nearby)
The approach is to a beautiful island green
You may need an old ball here!
A carry of 180 yards to a tight spot with OB on the left & trees on the right.
The short uphill approach is easy – once you get through the tee shot.
Tough? There are more to come…
Another short par 5, downslope with water on the right.
You have to be super long to reach the turn and reach the green.
The approach will be another uphill.
A medium length par 3, water is in front but only a 100 yards or so to clear it.
The green is protected by a bunker on the front right,
A short par 4, you need 200 or 210 here, too long and slightly off centre fairway will be blocked by trees on either side.
Another short par 5 but unless you are 300 plus long & hit the shot over the trees, play it as a par 5 as the approach will be difficult due to the green is hidden behind the trees.
A small carry over water in front, it’s the turtle back shape green that give me the fits.
Another tough one with an index of 14???
The landing area of the tee shot is very tight , OB on the right, water on the left. You can play it short (160 yards) to the red dot or super long to the blue (250 plus).
If the wind is up – only god can help you.
A very intimating hole here.
You will 2 choices, blue arrow – straight the the green, need to carry 250 yards with bunker in front.
Red, need 210 yards with a small pitch to the green
Green, safe option but the approach will be longer.
Another tight landspot at 230 -240 yards out and the fairway will go slightly up slope.
Water is in front and you need to fly at least 160-170 yards.
Approach is upslope.
A down hill long par 3.
Par 5, tight landing area, need to carry a channel that cut through the fairway the red 150-160 yards or blue 210-220 yards.
This is a dogleg right going slightly uphill, aim to the fairway bunker & the the approach is uphill.
This is surely the most beautiful course I have played with its natural plantations & lakes! There are little or no man made flower beds, no carefully manicured landscaping but who needs them? The entire course is built & curved around the plantation of matured trees around you! This is a course where you can only see water & trees and nothing else……no overhead power lines, no traffic noise, no houses, no factories……..
If you want to know or refresh your memory of playing in a deep isolated course in Europe…..look no further, this is it.
Having said that the course is tight with lots of carry over water, if you fancy a challenging course, give it a try.
Finally, you will need a good caddy with good knowledge is very useful here, make sure you get one from the caddy master – good luck & enjoy!
