Introduction

This is David Leadbetter's first ever course and, like all but one of the tracks at MH, was
designed in harness with the US pairing of Schmidt & Curley. (The exception is the
terrifying Norman course).

Anyway, the sultan of swing claims you need to use every club in the bag to get round here
and while I don't necessarily think that is true, this is a pretty good test of golf with a lot of
elevation change and plenty of big bunkers.

Course Description

Fairly generous fairways, dramatic changes in elevation, generally small and flat greens and large
cavernous bunkers characterize the Leadbetter, and while it may look fairly easy on the card
(it only measures 6,200 yards from the blues), the course is punctuated by some very difficult
holes as well. The monstrously long par 4, 12th - 448 yards uphill - is an example. On the flip
side there are a couple of very short par fours (and one tiny par three) which are perhaps a
little lacking in imagination.

Like the other courses at the club's Dongguan site the Leadbetter starts with an elevated teeing
position before plunging into the valley below. It's an attractive setting: more scenic than the
courses on the Shenzhen side, but not quite as jaw-droppingly beautiful as the back nine of the
Norman.

Not as difficult as either the Olazabal or the Norman, but harder than the Duval and Annika, the
Leadbetter is an all round decent track with enough good holes to bring you back for more.

Club Facilities

While we wait in anticipation for the opening of the enormous Dongguan Clubhouse, golfers are
still currently using the temporary facility. It's not at all bad with a decent pro shop, a fairly standard
locker room and a nice massage place. The food in the restaurant is particularly good - special
mention here for the Hainan Chicken: excellent!

Golf 007 Rating

EAGLE: Good, if unspectacular, all round. Question marks over the course condition but these have
improved recently.
